Flashback Fridays: Nokia N82

Announced just over 4 years ago, the Nokia N82 set the standards in the camera phone department. At the time, this phone had it all when it came to mobile imaging - 5MP camera, Carl Zeiss optics, Xenon flash, VGA resolution videos filmed at 30 frames per second.

Mobile Wars - Patents, Infringements and Intellectual Property

The last 12-24 months has seen the war of attrition between mobile phone manufacturers escalate to new heights, in court rooms across the globe. Apple sues Samsung, Samsung sues Apple, Apple sues HTC etc etc etc... It's also seen device manufacturers, along with OS designers such as Google, Apple and Microsoft scramble to buy and/or secure patents for as many trivial things as possible.

So what does this mean for us, the end consumer? It means we'll see delays in product launches, fewer international releases, as well as longer waiting times for product availability locally. Anyone remember the Galaxy Tab 10.1 saga...

But this blog hasn't been written to knock Apple, Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Google or whom ever it is that happens to have provided another large payday for our nation's patent lawyers.

This blog would simply like to ask the question as to whether all of this court room drama stifles true innovation. Not just how a lock screen unlocks. Not just how a sequence of data is sent to a particular cellular radio in a phone. Not just how wide a bezel is and the colour used. But true innovation.

Flashback Fridays: Nokia N93

Ok so let's go five years back when manufacturers were constantly finding new ways to create their phones. The agenda was to outdo one another by whacking on cameras with crazy resolutions (well at the time they were crazy and new), giving the phone personality by adding twisting screens and interesting keypad designs and when Symbian was the top choice in the smartphone world.

S-LCD on HTC

When a company launches a 'flagship' device, it pretty much means the phone they launched is 'top dog'. So for a phone to be the very best from the company, it's meant to have ...well the very best. From camera to software, sound and even display clarity and brightness.

It's just 'Sony' now!

As most of you are aware, Sony Ericsson will no longer be called 'Sony Ericsson' by mid 2012. Recently, a picture of the first Xperia device under the 'Sony' brand has been leaked.

Clearing up the issues regarding phone warranties, insurance and what you are entitled to as a consumer...

As anyone who has worked in telco can tell you, or retail for that matter, you'll come across the best and worst of all types of people on a daily basis. For telco staff, nothing brings out the worst in people more than a broken, shattered, frozen, lost, stolen or faulty mobile device.

Consequently, consumers can often feel angry, irritated or disgruntled as to what happens next. This article will attempt to shine a bit of light on the differences between warranties, insurance and consumer responsibilities.

Nokia N9: One gesture, multiple functions

Today, the standard beautiful smart phone comes in either black, white or silver. Add any other colours and the high-end gadget starts looking cheap, however the Nokia N9 begs to differ. It's daring, it's bold and it loves to steal attention from the other mobile phones. It is by far the only phone to date that can pull off bright and quirky colours coming in cyan, magenta, black and the newly added pearl white.

Razr Thin, Razr Sharp

It's thin, it's sharp and I mean it. Motorola's latest flagship device certainly turns head with its cunningly good looks partnered with swift intellect.

Super AMOLED not so super?

The other night, I cam across something rather interesting on the Motorola Razr display. While it has the ability to produce amazing colours where 'blacks are black' and reds are saturated yet pleasantly vibrant, I couldn't help but notice this on the screen while trying to take a picture at night. Check this out:

Hmm either I've managed to obtain the lemon of the crop (again) or this is what all Motorola Razr screens [or Super AMOLED as a matter of fact] look like. Check yours out, we'd love to hear if anyone else has the same issue.
