Galaxy Tab VS iPad 2

We finally got hold of a Tab 10.1 after all the legal issues it had with Apple. Was it really necessary for Apple to sue Samsung over the Tab 10.1? Or maybe the question is, did Samsung really copy the iPad/iPad 2?

Let's start with the appearance and size of the iPad 2 and the Tab 10.1

There is absolutely no doubt that the iPad 2 and Tab 10.1 look extremely similar. When I first read about Apple suing Samsung over the appearance of the Tab 10.1, I was almost furious. I thought "There is no way it looks like the iPad 2 and a person would have to be a downright idiot to get the two confused" but after seeing one in person, I started to have second thoughts. Look at the picture below:

As you can see, the bezel on the Tab 10.1 is almost the same size as the iPad 2 bezel. Both have a glossy finish and the only difference would be the home button on the iPad 2, the 'Samsung' logo and the wider screen on the Tab 10.1. There is really no point in talking about which one looks better because frankly, they look almost the same from the front.

Even the 10.1's charger is very similar to that of the iPad 2. It has a detachable USB cable and a wall mount. Look at the similarity in the picture below:

So what do you think? Did Apple really have every right to sue Samsung over the appearance of the Tab 10.1? To be fair, the two devices do look really similar but there's only so much a company can do in terms of a tablet design. We''d love to read your opinions on this matter, please feel free to post.
